Worksheet: Lonely Planet On-line
http://www.lonelyplanet.com
Today we're going to visit the Lonely Planet web site. Lonely
Planet publishes books and travel guides on a large number of interesting travel
destinations worldwide. Go to the above address and scroll down the page. Look
at the main categories. What type of information do you think each category will
offer?
- Click on Destinations. This area of the site provides
extensive information on thousands of cities and countries. Answer the questions
"Where do you want to go?" by typing in the word "Sydney." How
many matches do you find? Click on Lonely Planet's On-line Guide to Sydney.
Find three fun inexpensive things to do in Sydney. Find out a little bit on
the background of Sydney. Would you like to visit this city? Why or why not?
- Now, return to the main Destinations page. (Use the back
button on your browser or click on the Destinations icon at the bottom of the
page.) Choose another place to search for. Take a few minutes to explore your
own destination.
- Next, click on Optic Nerve. This portion of the site
provides photographs and information on different travel destinations. Choose Europe.
Choose one of the countries from the list. Next, choose a picture to look at.
What's happening in this picture? Click on Info to read information about
this country.
- Visit the the Thorn Tree. This is a discussion
forum where travelers can share advice and information. Spend a few minutes reading the
messages people have posted. Post your own if you have a response or want to share
a story.
- Click on Postcards. This is where travelers write in
to share advice and travel tips. Choose your home country and see what people who
have visited are saying about it.
- Finally, click on SubWWWay. This is Lonely Planet's
links page to other travel web sites. Take a few minutes and use this page as your
starting point for some surfing fun.
