Internet Worksheet: The Discovery Channel Online

Today, we are going to visit the Discovery Channel’s web site. Work with a partner and answer the following questions:

1. What are the feature stories for this week? Choose ONE of these features. Read the story with you      partner. Then, discuss the following:

• What is the story about?
• Where does it take place?
• Who is involved?
• Why is this story important?
• What is your opinion on this topic?

2. Next, you are going to perform a search. Click on Search. Type in the word "earthquake." Scroll down the list of results until you find one on "Big Weather." Click on this. Now, choose one broadcast to listen to or one article to read. With your partner, discuss the main idea or this broadcast or article.

3. Now, return to the search page and perform a search for your own keyword. Take a few minutes to explore the results of your search.

4. Click on Discovery School under Other Sites:

• What happened on this day in history?
• What are this season's TV Theme Weeks?
• Which theme do you find most interesting? Why?
  With your partner, choose one of these themes. What TV programs are going to be on the Discovery Channel about this theme?
• Which program do you find the most interesting? Read the summary of this TV program. (Note: at the bottom of the page, there are links to vocabulary and comprehension questions. Though these exercises are provided for teachers to use in class, you can print them up and use them on your own. If you have the Discovery Channel at home, you can print some up and use them to help you watch the TV program.)

5. Finally, take some time to wander around the rest of the web site. You can listen to recordings, watch animals on the live animal cameras, or read about a topic that interests you.
