Jane Err: Relationship Advice

 

For this activity, you will practice your vocabulary, reading, and writing skills.  You are going to visit a web site that offers dating advice. When you click on an answer, look at the top of this page to find out if your answer is correct. Your score for this activity will also appear at the top of the page.

Part One: Thinking about the Topic

Think about your answers to the following questions. 
  1. Have you ever done something dishonest to a boyfriend/girlfriend? 
  2. What are some types of dishonest behavior in a relationship?  How serious is each?
  3. Why might a person not be completely honest with their partner?

Part Two: Vocabulary

For each one, choose the sentence that is most similar in meaning.

1 He got a postcard from an ex.
An old friend sent him a postcard.
A former girlfriend sent him a postcard.
An old roommate sent him mail.
2 I freaked and took off in a huff.
I became really sad and left.
I got really angry.
I got frightened, anxious, and angry and I left quickly.
3 You're destined to get nailed.
You should think about visiting a hardware store.
I can almost guaruntee that you're going to get caught.

He wants the two of them to stay together.

He'll figure out what you did.
5 I was snooping around in my boyfriend's room.
I was staying in my boyfriend's room.
I was looking through his room without his permission.
My boyfriend knew that I was looking through his room.
 

Part Three: Reading

Next, you are going to visit an advice column at SWOON .   (Just click on the link, and the  page will open in a new window.)  When you have finished reading, answer these questions:

6 Why is the situation critical?
She hadn't told her boyfriend that she might borrow his bike.
Her boyfriend will definitely find out.
She's got a prblem with honesty.
What the ex had written really bothered her.
7 Jane gives a lot of advice? Which one of the following does she NOT advise?
apologizing
mailing him a postcard
wearing something sexy, if she likes wearing sexy clothes
looking in the dictionary
 

Part Four: Writing

Now, go to PartyLand's discussion forum on Dating & Relationships and write your answer to one of the following questions:

  1. Have you ever snooped on a boyfriend or girlfriend?  If so, tell about what happened.  Did you feel guilty?  Did you tell him or her about it?
  2. What do you think happened to this couple?
  3. What would you do if your boyfriend/girlfriend told you they had been snooping through your stuff?
